Statement on Gilad Shalit for the four-year anniversary of his capture by Hamas Four years ago on June 25, 2006, Israeli Army Corporal Gilad Shalit was kidnapped by Hamas in a cross-border raid following Hamas' violent takeover of the Gaza Strip after Israel withdrew from the region in September 2005. Shalit has been in captivity since he was 19 years old, held in violation of international humanitarian law put forth by the Geneva Convention. He has had no contact with family or the outside world, and has been denied all humanitarian aid, including visits from the International Red Cross. Last month’s Gaza Flotilla rejected Shalit’s family’s request to bring a small package to their son. Shalit will turn 24 later this summer. Read more and watch videos

2010 JCRC Annual Meeting
On June 8, 2010, the JCRC held its annual meeting at the Mayerson JCC. Dr. Deborah Lipstadt, Dorot Professor of Modern Jewish and Holocaust Studies and director of the Institute for Jewish Studies at Emory University, was our keynote speaker, speaking about Anti-Semitism and Anti-Israelism as Factors in Jewish Identity. Dr. Lipstadt prescribed a response to anti-Semitism that celebrates Jewish heritage, recognizes the Jewish people’s 3,000 year old ties to a Jewish homeland in Israel, and addresses it strategically with facts about the global contributions of Israel and Jewish communities worldwide. Dr. Lipstadt stressed that we should not let the fight against those who would destroy us become our reason for being, a recommendation that is applicable to all who may find themselves the targets of discrimination.
At our annual meeting, we honored Arna Poupko Fisher for four years of exceptional service as JCRC President, and welcomed our new President, Gary Greenberg. In his remarks, Gary noted that pikuach nefesh – the saving of human lives and those in jeopardy – will become the watchwords of his presidency. “We will stand with our neighbors against any threat,” Gary said. “And we will stand against the delegitimization of the State of Israel. These are our highest priorities.” In addition, we elected five new members to the board. Watch video, see photos, read about new board members
