Chaverim M'Israel Arrive in Cincinnati for a Year of Service
Chaverim M' Israel (Friends From Israel) is a program through which, each year, two dynamic young Israelis from Cincinnati's Partnership 2000 (P2K) city, Netanya, Israel, come to Cincinnati to promote a positive and realistic view of the land, culture, and people of Israel. Through education and interpersonal relationships between Israeli teens and members of the Cincinnati community, this program, developed in 2004, is able to increase awareness and connection to Israel and enhance youth travel to the country. During their time here, the Chaverim develop and provide informal and formal educational programs and activities throughout Greater Cincinnati, centered on contemporary Israel, Israeli culture, the history of Israel, current events, Hebrew language, and Jewish holidays and customs.
This year, we are delighted to have Gaby Silver and Matan Moyal in our community. Gaby and Matan are already busy creating a person-to-person bond between Israel and Cincinnati.
Gaby Silver is looking forward to celebrating her 19th birthday while in Cincinnati. Her parents immigrated, separately, to Israel from England as teenagers and then met and married in Israel. She has two younger siblings. Gaby was very involved in the Israeli scouting movement while growing up. She also loves to dance and participate in any creative art or craft activity. Gaby's goal this year is to break down the stereotypes that Americans may have about Israel and teach our community about her "real" Israel.
Matan Moyal is 19 years old. His father came to Israel from Morocco and his mother's family is from Libya. Matan has an older brother and younger sister. In high school, Matan majored in Physics and Electronics. He was also very involved in the Israeli scouting movement. Over the past few years, he and Gaby worked together in their scout troop, leading others and training the younger guides. Matan has taken this year of service because he feels it is important that Americans learn about Israel. He feels that American Jews need the existence of Israel, and that Israeli Jews need the connection with Jews of the Diaspora.
Gaby and Matan are available to come to facilities on a one-time basis or on a more regular basis. They are prepared to engage with both Jewish and non-Jewish audiences. A full curriculum of lessons is available. If you would like to know more about the program or to schedule a visit from the Chaverim M'Israel, please contact the Program Director, Sharon Spiegel at sspiegel@jfedcin.org or
David's Voice is an electronic magazine geared towards the young and young-at-heart Jews of Cincinnati. It aims to be the platform to share, experience, and interact with cutting edge and positive people and happenings in the Cincinnati Jewish community.
Standing Together will focus on the motivation, rationale and nature of Christian support for the Jewish State, and explore new possibilities for Christian-Jewish cooperation on Israel's behalf.
