Immediate Challenges

THE CHALLENGE: REDUCING JEWISH POVERTY
The increased demands on Jewish Family Service’s Emergency Assistance (Chaver) Fund were so great that the fund was depleted of money by mid-year. Its Food Pantry has also experienced an increase in usage.

  • Before the 2008 Recession, there were 1,100 Jewish households below 200% of the poverty line**
  • With its current resources, Jewish Family Service is able to serve only 150 households in financial distress

THE CHALLENGE: PROVIDING QUALITY LIVES FOR SENIORS
Since 2008, allocations funding to support vital senior programs have been increased by over 25%.  Even with this increase, we have not been able to meet the growing needs.

  • The number of meals provided to seniors by the JCC has increased 30% since 2009
  • The number of seniors served by Jewish Family Service has increased 28% since 2009
  • The number of trips required to transport seniors to the JCC has more than doubled to 1,000 per month since 2009

THE CHALLENGE: INCREASING ACCESS TO JEWISH LIFE
One third of those who need assistance to enable them to participate in Jewish life are being turned away.

  • $800,000 - Current allocation for subsidies to schools, camps and JCC
  • $1.2 million - Requested funding for these subsidies
