In the entire Jewish Bible (Tanach) only fifty women are mentioned by name, and they “speak” less than 1% of the time. Of those whose stories were shared, quite a few were depicted in a negative way. In this series, we will re-examine the texts in which women are mentioned and read between the lines for the details of their lives and stories. We will follow in the footsteps of forgotten women and argue that the negative portrayal of others actually stems from the positions of power and political influence they held. Focusing on the women of the bible, we will discuss gender roles, female agency and “girl power” and allow a more multi-layered understanding of this early Israelite/Jewish society.
