The conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which began in 2014 and was relatively quiet in 2016, escalated early February 2017.

Due to extensive fighting in the Eastern Ukraine region, roads have been blocked, preventing critical supplies from reaching the area.

Despite the unrest, our overseas partners, JDC and the Jewish Agency, are providing services to the Ukrainian Jewish community and other Internally Displaced Persons, and continue to monitor the situation.

See below for detailed updates from each agency on Federation-supported efforts in the conflict zone.

The National Coalition Supporting Eurasian Jewry (NCSEJ) has also released an update on the conflict which can be viewed here.

  • The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) is continuously monitoring the situation on the ground that may be impacting the network of Hesed welfare organizations that JDC supports and which provide services to clients in Eastern Ukraine.

  • Since the very outset of this crisis, The Jewish Agency for Israel offices in Eastern Ukraine have remained open and active. Bombings and fighting continue even today. The shelling of Donetsk earlier this month was only five kilometers from The Jewish Agency offices. Despite the uncertainty, there have been no changes in our work in Ukraine, and no plans to cancel any activities.
