Jewish Family Service brings to town Joshua Safran to share his harrowing, yet wryly funny story of his unconventional journey from being born to a coven of lesbian witches, to his hitchhiking childhood with his flower-child mother seeking utopia, to surviving the elements and a violent alcoholic stepfather before finally finding his way to law school and becoming an Orthodox Jew.
Safran is an attorney, writer, occasional rabbi, and a sought‐after speaker who has inspired audiences nationwide. His critically acclaimed memoir, FREE SPIRIT: Growing Up On the Road and Off the Grid, is going to be made into a movie. As a nationally recognized advocate for survivors of domestic violence and the wrongfully imprisoned, he was featured in the award-winning documentary Crime After Crime, which premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival.
Safran’s compelling story has been seen around the world on PBS, CBS, FOX, and Authors@Google; and heard on the BBC, NPR, PRX, CBS Radio and Talkline.
