COVID-19 community update; Helping an isolated student celebrate Passover

This Passover Seder was certainly different from all other Passovers, especially as we live through the closest thing to a plague most of us have experienced.

But along with the bitterness represented by maror, we have the sweetness of the haroset. And for me, starting week five of leading the Federation without any offices or facilities, I have a lot to be grateful for. My makeshift desk in the basement has a window. My mother is healthy. And my three children are safe.Dayenu.

I am also grateful to our strong, resilient Jewish community members. When we look back on this COVID-19 crisis, we will be proud of all we did together, with your support.

We can be proud that, together, we:

Helped many, including an isolated UC student and his girlfriend, to be able to celebrate Passover. Michael Evers brought them Haggadot for a Passover they hadn’t planned on having alone—before COVID-19 (Cincinnati Hillel)

“One of the most beautiful things about being a part of the Jewish community—and I think this time of crisis speaks to this—we support each other.’’
—Michael Evers, Director of Cincy Internships at Cincinnati Hillel

Launched tele-counseling, including supporting many isolated older adults, in their homes. With special crisis regulations changing daily, getting this done was a big lift (Jewish Family Service).

Started online English classes for our Russian-speaking seniors (Jewish Family Service Russian Jewish Cultural Center).

Reached 600+ new members in Mayerson JCC’s Facebook fitness group.

Provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to over 90 Jewish nursing facilities and Jewish social service agencies (Jewish Federations of North America).

Supported the Halom House throughout a difficult COVID-19 two-week quarantine—helping with everything from options for supplemental staffing, to homemade meals, to handmade get-well cards from local children. Halom House provides services to adults with developmental disabilities (Federation and Jewish Family Service).

“I am so grateful for how the Federation, JFS, and the Jewish community put their arms around us during the darkest moments of this crisis.”
—Amy Fisher, Executive Director, Halom House

While we are working hard to help individuals in our community, we must also address the financial strain on our essential organizations. Over the last few weeks, we have coached 20 partner agencies and congregations to apply for forgivable Federal loans, totaling $4.5 million, to help them cover short-term operating expenses and staffing costs.

This is all made possible because of you. Your support is changing this community. You positioned Federation to bring together social service agencies, government, and leaders to tackle community-wide problems in a coordinated, comprehensive way.

There is more, but even one of these good deeds is enough. Dayenu. I am grateful. Because together, we can do virtually anything.
